Mike Birbiglia’s latest show, ‘The New One,’ goes to Broadway

Broadway, meet Birbiglia.

Comedian and Shrewsbury native Mike Birbiglia is taking his latest show, “The New One,’’ to Broadway’s Cort Theatre.

Deadline reports that previews begin Oct. 25, and the limited engagement will officially debut on Nov. 11 and run through Jan. 20, 2019. The Broadway run comes over a year into Birbiglia’s tour of “The New One,’’ which had a month-long, sold out run off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre. He performed six shows at the Wilbur Theatre last October.

Birbiglia wrote the autobiographical one-man show with his wife, Jennifer Hope Stein.

In a statement announcing the move, the comedian thanked Stein and several of his frequent collaborators, including director Seth Barrish, executive producer Ira Glass of “This American Life,’’ and associate producer and brother Joe Birbiglia.

Broadway veteran and Tony Award-winning producer Kevin McCollum (“Avenue Q,’’ “In The Heights,’’ “Rent’’) will produce the show’s run at the Cort. Mike Lavoie will serve as production consultant.

“The truth is I try not to tell people anything about my new show because, I find, the less you know about the show the more you will enjoy it,’’ Birbiglia wrote. “My goal is to make as many people laugh as possible and ideally several hundred will cry.’’

The comedian also shared his excitement in a tweet on Wednesday.

“Mike Birbiglia? On Broadway? Yes. And yes,’’ he wrote in a note to fans. “Both of those things at the same time. I’m not sure I can even grasp it. But THANK YOU.

“Sometimes dreams come true and sometimes you jump through a window because you’re so anxious and then 15 years later your dreams come true and it’s sort of unrelated,’’ Birbiglia added.

The comedian, who has rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, once jumped out of a second-story window while sleepwalking — an experience he later turned into a one-man show, “Sleepwalk With Me,’’ which was adapted as a book, movie, and comedy album.
